May 8th is World Donkey Day!
Some may be getting ready for a graduation. Others are planning a Mother’s Day celebration. As for me, I want to recognize a most deserving holiday. May 8th is World Donkey Day every year. It’s time for Hallmark to crank out some cards!
What can donkeys teach us? Pretty. Much. Everything.
Disclaimer: I am a lifelong fan of donkeys and a years-long member of a donkey sanctuary nonprofit, Camp Tails in Carmel Valley, California. That said, I have no qualms spreading the donkey doctrine.
For eons (should I say “Eeyores” as a literary nod to our first and favorite Winnie-the-Pooh comrade?), donkeys were considered beasts of burden. They carried people and goods, pulled carts and hoeing implements. When travelers reached their destination or farmers passed away, donkeys were too often abandoned.
Sadly, now donkeys are often sold at auction so they can be slaughtered for their hides. Rescue and sanctuary organizations are doing their best to intervene to halt this inhumane effort.
There is much to do, but it is worth it.
Why? Donkeys remind us that we do better when we have a partner and circle of buddies through the years. We thrive on warm and dry shelter and knowing that a meal is coming. Nothing beats playing outside in the sunshine. A little bit of TLC (a wee brushing and a caress) makes us glow. All of us have a unique voice. Love shared is love doubled. We can all rock our own style.
So, on May 8th (and frankly, the other 364 days of the year), think of donkeys and smile. If you have a chance to meet one, go for it! And always keep in mind the lessons they teach us.
